Zayne Bourke was driving a B R Satherley Transport 2017 Kenworth K200 with an E5 550 Cummins and 18-speed Eaton Roadranger and a Hitachi digger on the back. His home base is Christchurch but this day he had started in Bulls and was heading for Blenheim. His main line of work was transporting machinery and construction equipment.
Zayne began his career at Sollys in Golden Bay, working for a time with New Zealand Trucking magazine contributor Craig McCauley.
“I got my start there, thanks to Ed and Merv. A family friend got the job for me there when I was a young fella. I started getting my licences, and when I got my class 5, I did linehaul in the North and South Islands.”
Deciding he wanted to do something different, Zayne moved to Satherleys.
“It’s just the places you get to go to and the people you meet on the road, I reckon.”
When asked what he saw as the main problem in the industry, Zayne says, as a younger driver, it wasn’t easy for him to say.
“Not many people are willing to help each other out anymore, except within their own company.”
The choice of chips or wedges was Zayne’s vexing question, and he had to think hard about that.
“Ooh, if you’re talking hot chips, I’d have to pick chips. With wedges, they can soak up the oil sometimes.”
