Ultrasonic DPF cleaning

Diesel particulate filters are notoriously tough to clean. Over time, they can become clogged, causing blockages that hinder the filter’s efficiency and sometimes result in having to replace the part. As such, regular DPF cleaning is essential.

BOP Radiator Specialists specialises in the manufacture, service and repair of radiators, intercoolers and oil coolers. Adding to its portfolio, the company has just purchased a new ultrasonic machine for cleaning diesel particulate filters and exhaust gas recirculation filters.

BOP Radiator Specialists’ Julian Parbery says the new machine restores performance and extends the life of equipment.

“Adding an ultrasonic cleaning step to the process will restore the DPF to near new condition,” he says.

According to Julian, the problem with traditional DPF cleaning methods is that they don’t clean the filter thoroughly, and carbon deposits and other contaminants remain embedded in the filter material.

“When the DPF is placed in an ultrasonic cleaner, every surface of the component where the liquid can reach is cleaned, even crevices that could never be touched by compressed air,” he says.

Julian says that, depending on the level of contamination and condition of the internal filter, the entire ultrasonic cleaning process can be completed within a couple of hours.

“The final result typically restores your DPF to near-new condition, or 98% of the original equipment manufacturer’s specifications, because the sound waves reach where nothing else can,” he says.

If ash is allowed to build up in the filter over time, it will eventually start to harden, which may result in the filter cracking and having to be replaced.

“Ultrasonic cleaning prevents this situation by providing the most thorough clean possible. What’s more, with the exhaust flow unhindered and the engine running more efficiently, you’ll be increasing the lifespan of other vehicle parts, too,” Julian says.

“Regular DPF cleaning at service time will help with preventative maintenance, and by using the correct oils, etc, this will keep your truck’s exhaust system in tip-top condition, reducing back pressure and allowing the engine to work at peak efficiency.”

Julian says BOP Radiator Specialists is the only company in the area offering ultrasonic cleaning as far as he knows.

“We also have the largest stocks of bolt-up radiators for Kenworth, Western Star and plastic and alloy radiators and intercoolers in New Zealand,” he says.

“We offer a fast and efficient service, be it for radiators, intercoolers, oil coolers or DPF and EGR cleaning. We will do our best to help the customer with a fast, efficient service.”

The service will be available at BOP Radiator Specialists, Te Puke, 07 5739109, and Heat Exchanger Services, Hornby, Christchurch, 03 372 9240.
