Paul Mattison

It‘s easy to see why so many people are CAT lovers if the one Paul Mattison was driving is anything to go by.

Paul was delivering cars in Palmerston North when roving reporter Faye Lougher stopped for a chat. Driving a 2014 Caterpillar CT630 for Auto Despatch NZ Ltd, Paul says he usually does Wellington to Auckland and return, but this time he‘d swapped trucks at Turangi and was heading back to his base in Wellington after the delivery.

A baker by trade, Paul says he got into driving 28 years ago while living in Christchurch and playing softball.

“My coach needed a driver so I got my class 5 and trailer all in one go and started driving for him. I‘ve done driving here and there over the years but this is my first full-time job.”

Paul couldn‘t think of any particular problems with the industry, apart from “silly drivers on the road” – a common refrain from most truckies.

The vexing question of Ford or Holden drew a rapid response – Paul is definitely a Ford man!
