Nathan Douglas from Truckstops Wellington has beaten Martyn Alexander from Australia to win the New Zealand vs Australia Hino Technical Challenge.

The competition took place in Sydney on 21 November, with Douglas and Alexander battling to complete a series of repair and diagnostic tasks in the new Hino standard cab model.

Regarded as the most comprehensive skills contest of its type in the trucking industry, under the watchful eye of Denso Australia judges the two contestants had just 30 minutes to complete the tasks. To add to the pressure, they were watched by an audience of more than 100 people, including senior members from Hino Motors Japan.

Within about 10 minutes both contestants had their engine start faults repaired and engines running within three seconds of each other. However, both then found the engine check light was on again and the race to diagnose further faults continued. Using Hino diagnostic equipment, the faults were swiftly repaired. With the clock now reaching the 30-minute limit, Douglas had repaired one further headlight fault, thereby claiming the win.

“This competition has been a compelling showcase of the upskilling our technicians which is a key focus area as we work to ensure Hino truck owners receive the best possible aftersales outcomes,” said Hino Distributors NZ general manager Darren Salt.
