The Ministry of Transport is asking for feedback on proposals that will require new and used vehicles imported into New Zealand to meet stronger exhaust emissions standards.
The proposals are for New Zealand to adopt Euro-6 standards for light and heavy vehicles imported into the country.
This would require vehicles to emit much lower amounts of nitrogen oxides, particulates and other pollutants that are harmful to health than are permitted under current emissions standards.
New Zealand and Australia are the only remaining developed countries that are yet to move to Euro-6.
The proposals aim to align with Australia where possible, as New Zealand shares a global supply of new vehicles with Australia.
The proposal also accounts for the large number of used imports from Japan.
Consultation closes 5pm on 22 June.
