Roy Boothey ’s association with Volvo trucks began 36 years ago when he first sat behind the wheel of a Volvo F86 on a farm in the Williams area of the Western Australian wheat belt. After 20 years on the farm, Roy joined the Derek Murray team in 2001 and has stayed there ever since. During this time he has progressed up through the big banger range of Volvos from the 520, to a 610, a 580, right up to his current 600, which was the first new generation FH to join the fleet. A brief stint in a Kenworth K104 didn’t impress him and he says, “ Volvo is the only truck to drive”.
When Paul O’Callaghan shared a yarn with Roy at the Road Trains of Australia yard in Broome, Western Australia, he had just driven 2500km from Perth along with Kiwi native Troy Keith who was piloting the other Murray FH16 600. The friendly pair were waiting to unload feed on to a cattle ship later in the night.
Roy has always loved driving and is as keen as when he first started out in the F86. His main gripe nowadays is the “Ever-increasing paperwork and bullshit”. Positano in Italy is his favourite place to visit and he does not hesitate in stating that this is where he would go if given the choice of any destination.
