Govt opens public consultation on the future role of hydrogen

The Government has opened public consultation on the future role of hydrogen in the energy system, and the challenges and opportunities for supporting green hydrogen production and use in New Zealand.

“There are opportunities for green hydrogen to help us to decarbonise sectors that are hard to electrify, support regional economic transitions, and underpin our energy security and resilience,” said Dr Linda Wright at the Hydrogen Council.

“Green hydrogen is a clean carrier of energy that produces minimal or no emissions at the point of use. Green hydrogen is being explored in activities where swapping to direct electricity is not possible or has drawbacks, like for heavy transport, chemical production, and in future aviation and marine transport.”

The Ministry of Business Innovation and Enterprise is asking for feedback on the Interim Hydrogen Roadmap, which sets out the Government’s initial position on the opportunities for hydrogen in New Zealand’s energy transition, outlines actions the Government is taking to establish a sustainable and safe hydrogen industry in Aotearoa New Zealand, and signals areas where the Government plans to do further work.

Consultations are open until 2 November. Find out more and have a say at www.mbie.govt.nz/ourenergyfuture.
