Carl and Izaak Kirkbeck spotted Eddie at the BP Truckstop in Onehunga one Saturday afternoon recently, fuelling up after the weekly wash. He was about to park up at Owens‘ Penrose depot and head home to Bowentown in the Bay of Plenty for some R&R. An owner-driver for Owen‘s, Eddie shares the five trips a week Auckland-Wellington general freight run with his full-time employed driver.

Eddie‘s ride these days is a far cry from the old cream can delivery trucks he started driving more than 45 years ago for his Dad. Speaking highly of the 685hp Mack Super Liner, Eddie is quick to add that for him it‘s not about chrome and lights any more, it is all about making a dollar.

We asked Eddie what he enjoyed most about driving, and his response was rapid, “Getting paid.”And Eddie‘s vexing question? Fresh fish fillets or fresh shellfish? “Both, and plenty of it!”
