Continous learning and living the dream

Truck driver Jarrod Hepi has just completed his level 3 CRT-HVO qualification through MITO and says the course was a great blend of practical and theoretical knowledge.
The course involved hands-on learning and understanding the theory behind operating heavy vehicles safely and efficiently, Jarrod says. It covered various topics, including load security, vehicle dynamics, road safety and fatigue management, all of which are essential in Jarrod’s day-to-day work.
“One part that really stood out to me was learning about the mechanics of heavy vehicles and how small adjustments can make a big difference to safety and performance,” he says.
”It gave me a new appreciation for the technology behind the vehicles I operate and how to get the best out of them.”
Jarrod says another highlight was understanding the importance of staying alert and well-rested to avoid fatigue.
”It’s something I’ve always been mindful of, but the course reinforced how critical it is, not just for my own safety but for everyone on the road,” he says.
”It’s been really rewarding to apply what I’ve learned.”
Jarrod says completing the qualification while working had its challenges, but it was manageable with a bit of planning and discipline.
”Juggling study with my job meant I had to stay on top of things, especially during the busier weeks.
”I think the biggest challenge was finding the time to fit it all in, but I broke the course into smaller chunks and worked on it whenever I had a spare moment.
”It helped that some of the learning was practical and related to my job. So I could often apply what I was learning straightaway, which made it stick.”
Jarrod says many parts of the qualification relate to his job, including safety, efficiency and proper handling of loads.
”As a heavy-vehicle operator, understanding how to secure loads safely and maintain vehicle stability is critical, and the course gave me a solid grasp of these skills,” he says.
”It’s definitely changed how I work – I’m more aware of the ‘why’ behind the processes we follow and feel more confident in handling different situations.
”It’s also made me more mindful of things like fatigue management and planning my workday to stay focused and alert. Overall, it’s helped me become a better and safer driver on the road.”
Jarrod says training is important because it helps you grow and helps you stay at the top of the game.
”In my role as a heavy-vehicle operator, safety and efficiency are everything, and training ensures I have the skills and knowledge to handle my responsibilities confidently,” he says.
”It’s also about staying up to date. The transport industry is always evolving, and training helps me keep up with changes whether it’s new regulations, technologies or best practices.
”On a personal level, I enjoy learning. It’s satisfying to challenge myself to tackle new things and see how far I can go. The more I invest in training, the better I can perform, and that benefits not just me but everyone I work alongside, too.”
Jarrod says he is keen to gain more experience, improve efficiency on the road and continue “living the dream”.
”It’s about enjoying the work and staying motivated by the variety it brings, as no two days are ever the same. I’m looking forward to building on what I’ve achieved so far and seeing how I can continue to grow in this role.”
Jarrod says he has really enjoyed the process of completing this qualification.
”It’s not just about the skills I’ve gained but also the confidence and pride that come with achieving something that directly supports my career.
”The skills I’ve learned aren’t just tools for my job; they’re tools for growth, safety and success in the long term. I’m proud to be part of an industry that plays such a vital role in New Zealand and look forward to continuing to make a positive contribution.”
