Weekly traffic numbers crash

3 MinutesBy NZ Trucking magazineApril 7, 2020

The NZTA has released the latest weekly traffic count information on state highways across key traffic sites in New Zealand‘s main urban centres.

The numbers reveal that Auckland traffic is down 75.9% compared with last year, and when compared with last week (the numbers are correct as at 3 April 2020) there was a 66.2% drop in light traffic and a 50.0% drop for heavy traffic.

Wellington traffic is down 81.7% compared with last year, and when compared with last week there was a 65.9% drop in light traffic and a 74.6% drop for heavy traffic. Wellington‘s heavy traffic figures were affected by an accident on Saturday 28 March that has left the Aotea Quay off-ramp closed (so some heavy traffic moved via the Hutt Road instead).

Christchurch traffic is down 77.2% compared with last year, and when compared with last week there was a 60.6% drop in light traffic and a 61.2% drop for heavy traffic.

Hamilton traffic is down 74.3% compared with last year, and when compared with last week there was a 62.5% drop in light traffic and a 47.8% drop for heavy traffic.

Dunedin traffic is down 80.6% compared with last year, and when compared with last week there was a 63.9% drop in light traffic and a 54.5% drop for heavy traffic.

NZTA advises that this information must be read in conjunction with the following caveats:

  • Data is representative of traffic flows and not of total traffic volume in each region.

  • Data is current at 3 April 2020.

  • Data is based on the latest five-weekday average.

  • Data is sourced from NZ Transport Agency TMS data.

  • Light and heavy traffic volumes have been split using TMS data where vehicles with a length of less than 5.5m are classed as light vehicles. Heavy vehicles are over 11m long. Those between 5.5 and 11m are split 50:50 into light and heavy vehicles.
