Pete Harrison
Pete Harrison works for Fulton Hogan‘s heavy haulage division based out of Dunedin. Although the foreman and normally found driving one of the pilot vehicles, he can jump into a number of trucks when required.
It was Pete‘s turn for fuel in Milton when Craig Andrews bailed him up near the end of autumn. Pete was driving a 620 Scania with a load of power poles bound for Alexandra from Dunedin.
The Scania is fairly new and drags a bitumen tanker around the south in summer and a number of other trailers when required during the off season.
It‘s a pleasure to operate, says Pete. Eagle eyed readers will recognise Pete from the RTF national drivers champs last August where he won the Dunedin round.
He got into driving when he was 16. His dad owned a joinery business and Pete used to do the furniture deliveries in a petrol powered D600 Ford. He has now been in the industry for 35 years, the last 12 and a half with Fulton Hogan, which he rates highly as a company to work for.
He enjoys his own company but works as part of a team with great spirit in the heavy haulage division. The variety of work and the countryside this role offers him is also hugely appealing.
The downside for the industry in his mind would be the pressure placed on drivers with time constraints, and one thing he has really learnt in the heavy haulage business is patience.
Pete chose Vegemite over Marmite for the vexing question.
