Scania - The S-series

The S500, Scania’s new white knight and it certainly doesn’t disappoint in the flesh...

It looks the same, but nothing like its predecessor. It’s certainly beautiful, there’s no mistaking that, sort of harder, accentuated Scania lines, but you instantly know just by looking that it’s slipperier through the air.

It’s design at its most clever. Park it in the same hall, and it dates its forerunner instantly. For this and many other reasons the 2017 International Truck of the Year will have customers on both sides of the Tasman champing at the bit for its arrival.

The show truck sported the DC13 155 Euro 6 6-cylinder rated at 368kW (500hp) and 2550Nm (1880lb/ft) of torque. We think that’s an entirely appropriate spec given the planet’s direction. It’s a fact of life that for those of us who believe the old adage ‘There’s no replacement for displacement’, the end is very much nigh.

There’s no point in attempting to list tech and safety features in this machine because it’s a case of just tick every box you can think of and many you can’t, like curtain air bags on the driver’s side.

The interior of the S500

Big White had a completely flat floor, with the CS 20H sleeper offering its resident a 1000mm extendable bunk. With the FH series more than well established, and the Actros and MAN D38s staking their claims rapidly, the arrival of the S Series – and hope upon hope the DAF XF Euro 6 – will certainly set the scene for a good old market share barney.

One that will be won and lost not on product, but on aftersales support.
