50MAX closing in on nationwide access

Two more councils have granted access to their local road networks, bringing the 50MAX single permit system closer to nationwide coverage.

The Clutha and Buller District Councils have allowed 50MAX access from 1 July 2017, bringing to 63 the number of local councils now signed up to the 50MAX-1Network single permit system.

“This is a great step for 50MAX, following on from the recent decision of Southland and Northland District Councils to allow access, bringing total coverage up to 95 per cent of councils,” says NZ Transport Agency principal project manager Grant Foster.

“We are in discussions with the three remaining councils that are not part of 50MAX and remain confident that we can achieve our goal of every road controlling authority joining the scheme, driving even greater productivity benefits for New Zealand,” Foster says.

“This also serves as a reminder that both access and bridge restrictions for 50MAX are subject to change, so operators need to ensure they keep checking our online maps regularly to ensure they know exactly which routes they can use.”

50MAX trucks can carry heavier loads on an additional axle, meaning no extra impact on roads and bridges. The increased payload allows delivery of more freight with each trip, reducing overall truck travel by around 15%. They are also more efficient and have more advanced safety features than vehicles they are replacing.
